Ishavskatedralen, Tromsø

Ishavskatedralen, or ‘The Arctic Cathedral’ is reportedly one of Norway’s most photographed and recognisable landmarks, and it’s easy to see why. I love this photo for many reasons: The memories it evokes of a glorious night enjoying the crisp Arctic evening air; the way the light trails from passing vehicles neatly surround the beacon-like frame of the church itself; the beauty of the colourful light shining through the meticulously designed stained-glass windows; the fact that the Tromsø Bridge, usually a prominent feature in photos of the city of Tromsø, is both visible and hidden within the photo. For a trip that was partly about photographing the Northern Lights in one of my favourite cities, it’s a happy accident that this image with it’s dark, uneventful skies came out as one I consider to be amongst the best.
